CHOOSING THE RIGHT SPACE FOR YOUR PODCAST
Finding the right podcast recording space plays an important role in having a great podcast. When people are first starting out, their home or bedroom seems like the ideal place to record. However, what they don’t consider is the quality of their podcast. They may find that recording at home comes with a lot of background noise, or for video podcasts, the background may not be aesthetically pleasing. A great podcast space will have audio that sounds crisp and clear, and a background that is visually pleasing to the audience.
So what space should you choose?
1 - STUDIO
Studios are explicitly designed for that purpose, walls padded with acoustic foams means that sound waves are absorbed and not bounced off to create an echo. Some studios offer up recording time and space for podcasters for a specific price. You should consider checking your local studios to see if this is available for you. Some podcasters will substitute for renting out a studio, get a room and convert it into one.
A small room with very few windows and no air conditioning will suffice for this purpose. There are also studios that can customise the space to your preference, and fit whatever vibe you want to go for.
2 - AT HOME
Bedrooms are also a pretty decent place to record. Your bed is a large sound absorber, and you can place pillows around your microphone to ensure that sound doesn’t get deflected. You can also buy sound deflectors to put up in your room to deflect any echos. However, there are certain external factors that cannot be controlled, such as outdoor noise and other background disturbances that pillows alone will not be able to effectively hide.
A bedroom may be the place of choice when first starting out with your podcast if you’re on a budget, however, there are podcast recording studios that offer competitive rates and packages that best suit you.
3 - OUTSIDE/CAR
Cars can have pretty good acoustics, and the positioning of the seats helps to absorb sound. Another surprising thing is how well cars block out external noise. Car doors do an excellent job keeping sound out because of how sealed they are, so when you're recording, you can rest assured there will be a minimal disturbance of any kind.
The one drawback of recording in your car is comfort. First of all, setting up your equipment could be a heck of an issue, and even beyond that is being able to comfortably, with your equipment, sit down and record for extended periods.
Choosing the right space should be stress-free and an exciting part of your podcast journey. If you’re planning to record consistently, you may be spending the majority of your time at the space you choose to record in. Make sure it’s a space that is comfortable, flexible, soundproof, and has all the equipment you need.
